As of this January, the college has implemented a new lockout policy when it comes to getting locked out of your dorm room.
The new policy states that any student is allowed to ask to be let into their room a total of three times before they are charged for each additional time that they get locked out. The fine for each additional lockout is $3.
This new policy was written and implemented by the WaTurBall Area Coordinator Andel Fils-Aime. According to Fils-Aime, students should not be shocked by this recent change, since many other schools follow the same policy, where the fines consist of much higher amounts up to $75.
"The numerous lockouts create difficulties for Campus Safety. Many students leave their keys in their dorms on the weekends so as not to lose them and constantly ask to be let into their dorms. It can be problematic if you have the same students asking to be let in since some students might have lost their key and are unwilling to report it because of the high charge," Fils-Aime said. "Even though the issue seems to be more prevalent in the freshman dorms, Stauffer and Johnson, the new policy has been implemented across the whole campus."
As far as the RAs who are responsible for making sure this new policy is enforced, opinions vary because of differences in experience with the issue. Junior Kristin Whitaker, the RA in Harris D stated that she has not had a resident locked out all semester and that she does not feel greatly affected by this new policy. Sophomore Steve Olvera, an RA in Turner says that although he has had a few cases of lockouts, he has not noted multiple lockouts from any one person, but will keep track from now on and impose the fines if he has to.
As far as the first-year dorms are concerned, one can observe both ends of the spectrum. Sophomotr Flaka Radoniqi, a female RA in Johnson said, "Although I had numerous lockouts at the beginning of the year, they have reduced a great amount recently. I will be implementing the new policy, but I do not think I will have to fine many people." Senior Josh Guereque, a male RA in Stauffer on the other hand is relieved by the new policy. "I have had so many lockouts to the point that it became unbearable," Guereque said. "Students are constantly getting locked out when they leave to take a shower or when their roommates leave without informing them. I have had cases where the same student has been locked out twice in one day. I welcome the new policy and I hope it will teach students to be more responsible with their room keys."
For Guereque, the new policy is welcomed, while for others it will not result in much of a change. Whatever the case, students will most likely be more careful when leaving their dorms or pay the price.
