After an active 2009 from stalwarts and newcomers alike, 2010 is shaping up to be an equally landmark year in the world of music. With new releases from established bands across the genre spectrum, 2010 should offer all music fans a reason to mark their calendars.
For those who get their kicks from the computerized beats and synthesizers of dance and pop music, the new year has already started with the chart topping Animal by new artist Ke$ha. On April 19, the first new material from Jennifer Lopez in three years will see the light of day, in the form of Love?. Christina Aguilera will put out Bionic in March, her follow up to her chart-topping 2006 album Back to Basics.
In the rap and hip hop arena, the year will arguably be best highlighted with the release of two Lil' Wayne albums. The first, Rebirth, is the rapper's first foray in the world of rock. While the album reportedly has some rap songs, it is largely founded around guitars and drums. It is scheduled for release on February 2. The second album from Lil' Wayne, Tha Carter IV, is in the vein of the rapper's more typical music, and if the four million records sold of Tha Carter III are any indicator, it will be sure to please. Usher is set to release his latest album, Raymond v. Raymond, on March 2. It is the follow up to the certified triple platinum Here I Stand, released in 2008.
The hipster sensibilities of alternative rock and the more mainstream, chart-topping rock will have their own impact on the 2010 musical landscape. Blink-182 reportedly went into the studio this month, which could culminate in a late 2010 release. This will be their first album since their 2005 breakup and subsequent reformation in early 2009. The album is currently unnamed, and the album, obviously, is yet to be dated.
The White Stripes are set to release Under Great White Northern Lights on March 16. It is the follow up to 2007 Grammy winning Icky Thump.
Linkin Park has also been back in the studio, with eyes on a 2010 release. The album is to be produced by Rick Rubin, who produced their latest record, Minutes to Midnight. As of now, five songs are finished, and it contains the usual mixture of rapping and singing seen in Linkin Park's cookie cutter rap-rock. Korn has finished the recording of their ninth studio album and is looking at a release date of June.
