Bored? The top five winter activities
Quaker Campus
Issue date: 1/21/10 Section: Campus Life
While southern California is not exactly the ideal locale for traditional winter activities, that does not necessarily mean there is a lack of things to do during these "cold" winter months. While you will not be trudging through feet of snow or scraping ice off your windshield, here are five things southern California has to offer:
1. Ice Skating: While generally thought possible only in places where it is actually cold enough for the ice to freeze, there are a few places in Los Angeles that have captured that unique ability so that those who do not usually get to experience this phenomenon can do so. Whether you are executing a perfect triple axle or gripping the sides of the rink to get around safely, it is a fun activity to do with friends. Ice at Santa Monica (5th Street and Arizona Avenue) is open until Jan. 31.
2. Hitting the Slopes: Do you snowboard, ski or wish you could do either? Or are you just an expert snow ball thrower? Big Bear, located in the San Bernardino Mountains in San Bernardino, Calif. is open for the winter season. They offer rental equipment and lessons for those lacking in experience, and fresh slopes for those who already know their way around. For additional details, go to www.bigbearmountainresorts.com.
3. Grab a Cup of Hot Chocolate: When the sun dares to hide behind the clouds and leave us in shivering 60-degree weather, what is the best way to warm up? Grab a cup of hot chocolate with friends. If you are not picky, you can make your own or visit your local coffee shop for a cup. However, Lesley Balle of Tasting Table a Los Angeles, a website devoted to finding the best of what LA has to offer, has narrowed down the following five as the places to go for hot chocolate. Some are a bit of a travel, but if you are up for an adventure, it is certainly worth a try:
Compartes-located in Los Angeles, Calif.
Jin Patisserie-located in Venice, Calif.
ChocolateBox-located in La Canada Flintridge, Calif.
