The women's lacrosse team had the most wins in program history as they finished their regular season with five victories and an overall record of 5-8. Seniors Shari Brokowsky, Cassidy Lake and Kourtney Sexauer all left Whittier College with a win, as they beat Pacific University 19-5 on Saturday, April 19.
"These are the first three seniors to complete all four years of the women's lacrosse program, and they, along with [Head Coach] Emily Frey, put the program on their shoulders and built it out of nothing," sophomore leading scorer Emily Mukai said.
Sexauer had 2 goals for the Poets, Lake scored three times and Brokowsky had 1 goal and three assists. The Poets managed 37 shots on goal while Pacific only had 10 shots on sophomore goalie Jess Farrell. Mukai led all Poet scorers with 6 goals, giving her 35 points for the season while sophomore Sherise Varga and first-year Trillium Santin added 2 goals apiece.
The team next year will have solid depth, as nine sophomores, seven juniors and one senior will now have had significant exposure at the Division III level.
"We are very excited about next year's team and because Coach Frey is so good at recruiting, we will have a solid depth in the incoming freshmen class," Mukai said.
The team will have the possibility of entering the SCIAC conference in the upcoming year if Occidental agrees to become Division III. If Oxy comes into SCIAC, look for Poet women's Lacrosse team to make some noise in conference play in 2009.
