Three Whittier softball players were honored as All-Conference selections on Wednesday, April 30 by SCIAC. First-year Molly Yriate received the second highest honor when she was selected as Rookie of the Year. Junior Vicky Ovieda was also selected to the first All-Conference team as outfielder and junior Nicole Acevedo was selected to the All-Conference second team for first base.
"The season didn't end the way we wanted to, but a lot of good things came out of the season," Head Softball Coach Jennifer Bridges said.
Whittier ended the season with two away doubleheaders over the weekend that determined their participation in the first-ever SCIAC post-season tournament. Before the weekend, Whittier swept this season's new SCIAC champion Redlands on Sunday, April 20 and was tied for third place in the standings.
The Poets played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday, April 25 and lost 10-3 and 8-7. The following day, Saturday, April 26, they played La Verne on Saturday, and lost 10-2 and 6-4. The team tied for fifth in conference standings with Cal Lutheran at 11-13. Overall, the Poets wrapped up the season with a 21-17 record, the second season in a row that the Poets has won more than 20 games in a season and had several sweeps throughout the season against La Sierra, Wesleyan, Occidental, University of Dallas and Redlands.
The softball team plans on returning everyone except a pitcher and second base player, seniors Sheryl Fukuda and Deena Arenas, who both graduate this year.
"I think it's a great advantage because everyone on the team already knows my philosophy," Bridges said. "And on top of returning athletes we're also bringing in great recruits. My goal is to make improvements every year."
This season concludes Bridges' first year as head softball coach for Whittier.
"I came into a really solid team," Bridges said. "Coming into a new team, you don't know what to expect like with attitudes, goals, and physical ability. I feel lucky because we're already grounded and we have a good group of girls with great team chemistry."
