Whittier College baseball swept Occidental College in a three-game SCIAC series on April 25 and 26 but lost their chance for a spot in the Playoffs. The Poets won 12-6 in game one at home, then took both legs of a doubleheader at Redlands 12-4 and 11-9, respectively.

The Poets won game one with an 11 run comeback in the seventh and eighth innings highlighted by a grand slam from Cappelletti, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with six RBIs. Junior Justin Armijo pitched eight innings, one walk and four earned runs to get his third win of the year. Senior Blake Luitwieler pitched a hitless ninth in relief.

The Poets took the second game 12-4 which was also led by Cappelletti who went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and 3 runs scored. Acker also hit a home run and scored twice. This time junior Thomas Phelps got the win allowing three earned runs, six hits and seven strike outs in eight innings. Senior Mark Canner wrapped up the game with a hitless ninth inning.

The Poets took the series finale 11-9, with two home runs by senior Charles Acker, and one each from senior Ryan Martin and junior Luke Moedritzer. Junior Marty Bueno was credited with the win, leaving the game after 5.2 innings with an 8-6 lead. Luitwieler recorded the last out of the game to earn his second save this season.

"The Oxy series was great for us - we finally put everything together but it was a shame we waited until we were out of the hunt," Phelps said.

The Poets wrap up their season on May 2 and 3 when they take on Cal Lutheran in a three-game series. Game one is at Cal Lutheran and is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
