Whittier College will see the last of its grass in the Memorial stadium as the field is replaced with new synthetic turf during the summer. The installation of Sprinturf will begin in late May. "It's a big project to accomplish," Head Football Coach BJ Hammer said.
Whittier College baseball swept Occidental College in a three-game SCIAC series on April 25 and 26 but lost their chance for a spot in the Playoffs. The Poets won 12-6 in game one at home, then took both legs of a doubleheader at Redlands 12-4 and 11-9, respectively.
The men's lacrosse season is coming to an end after their final game Saturday, May 3 against Colorado College. This game will determine the Poets' qualification for the NCAA Championships. There are high expectations for a win against the Tigers which will determine the amount of achievement the team has made this season.
The women's lacrosse team had the most wins in program history as they finished their regular season with five victories and an overall record of 5-8. Seniors Shari Brokowsky, Cassidy Lake and Kourtney Sexauer all left Whittier College with a win, as they beat Pacific University 19-5 on Saturday, April 19.
The women's water polo team beat Redlands 9-8 on Sunday, April 27 in the third round of the SCIAC Championship tournament to take fifth place in the tournament and leading them to a sixth place finish in SCIAC. "Before the game started we all got together and decided there was no other choice but to win the game, especially for us seniors because it was our last game," senior Nicole Sandoval said.
Three Whittier softball players were honored as All-Conference selections on Wednesday, April 30 by SCIAC. First-year Molly Yriate received the second highest honor when she was selected as Rookie of the Year. Junior Vicky Ovieda was also selected to the first All-Conference team as outfielder and junior Nicole Acevedo was selected to the All-Conference second team for first base.
Senior Manny Sanchez leaves a legacy for Whittier Sports breaking eight individual swimming records: 50, 100, 200 freestyles, 100 and 200 breaststrokes, 200 backstroke and 200 and 400 individual medleys. Sanchez also participated in two relay teams (200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay) that earned top scores.
